ATOMS OF THE UNIVERSE
This "ATOMS OF THE UNIVERSE" series of artworks is inspired by the Platonic Solids.
There are 5 Platonic solids; also called regular geometric solids or polyhedra. They are 3D in shape and each face is the same regular sized polygon. The name of each shape is derived from the number of its faces – 4 (tetrahedron), 6 (hexahedron), 8 (octahedron), 12 (dodecahedron) and 20 (icosahedron). Each Platonic Solid also has a dual polyhedron i.e. a Platonic Solid that fits inside the original Platonic Solid and connects to the mid-point of each face.
But why are they so amazing ? Well a 3D model of any of the elements in the Periodic Table will show a crystalline structure at the atomic level made up of one of the Platonic Solid shapes. This is why the Ancient Greeks called them the Atoms of the Universe as they form the basis of literally ALL structure. But Plato and his mathematical peers were clearly not the first people to study the Solids - as there have been examples of the five shapes unearthed in Scotland dated a couple of millennia before.
The Solids themselves are used in the study of mathematics, medicine, science, astronomy, meteorology and geology, just to name a few and they form part of the principles behind Sacred Geometry; which maintains that a hidden mathematical order unifies all aspects of the Universe. So metaphysically; the Platonic Solids show how all things come from one source and are intimately and permanently woven together. In more general terms, they are part of a belief structure that mathematical ratios and geometry are the building blocks of the whole Universe.
